Designing a Tier System People Can Understand

Loyalty tiers fail when members cannot tell where they stand or what the next level takes. The design problem is clarity, not generosity.

What a tier system is

A loyalty programme with levels: benefits improve as a member does more. The designer's job is to make three things obvious: where am I, what do I get, what would it take to move up.

Show the current state

The member's level and progress belong on the first screen, not behind a menu.

Make the ladder legible

Be honest about demotion

If levels can be lost, say how. Hidden demotion rules destroy trust faster than modest benefits do.

A reference layout

Comparison pages written for users are good study material because they have to be scannable. One example in Traditional Chinese: a level-by-level comparison of VIP benefits with the conditions for promotion and for keeping a level (VIP 分級與回饋比較). Note that it gives the retention rule equal weight, which many programme pages omit.

Test with a newcomer

Hand the page to someone who has never seen it and ask what they would need to do to reach the next level. If they cannot answer in ten seconds, redesign the table.
